Green tea is the second most popular drink in the world. No other food or drink has been reported to have as many health benefits as green tea and it has been recorded as a medicine in China for at least 4,000 years. In fact, the ancient Chinese proverb says, “better to be deprived of food for 3 days than tea for one”.*
Green Tea’s health-promoting action is due to its rich content of antioxidant compounds such as epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) and catechins. Benefits ascribed to EGCG include antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity, supporting cardiovascular health, protection against UVB radiation, promotion of cell membrane integrity (more effectively than vitamins E or C), insulin-supportive action, bone-building, neuroprotection and increased 24 hour thermogenesis in humans.*
Green tea extracts have been shown to have more health benefits than an equal volume of black tea in terms of antioxidant capacity-green tea has 165mg of total phenol equivalents compared to black tea’s 124mg. Green tea extracts have more catechins than black tea and this is due mainly to its EGCG content, which has been shown to prevent LDL cholesterol oxidation and support health cholesterol levels. This may help to explain the “Japanese Paradox” where the heart health of Japanese men is exceptionally high, even though approximately seventy five percent of them are smokers.*
