St. John's Wort, an effective and time-tested remedy for depression, is today one of the most popular herbs in the world. Hypericin, the active ingredient in this herb, has been shown in studies to inhibit the activity of monoamine oxidase, which is elevated in depressed individuals. New research shows that St. John's Wort may actually increase serotonin production.
