Your natural choice to lower cholesterol
Policosanol is a unique nutraceutical that contains a number of natural compounds isolated from the wax of sugar cane. Whereas cholesterol-lowering statin drugs work by inhibiting HMG-CoA reductase, policosanol inhibits cholesterol synthesis at a point between the formation of acetate and mevalonate. Regular use of policosanol produces a significant reduction of serum total cholesterol and LDL-C levels, and an increase in HDL-C in a safe and consistent manner. And unlike many other cholesterol-lowering strategies, policosanol does not lose effectiveness over time.
Policosanol Lowers Cholesterol
Policosanol has exceptional clinical documentation. It has been proven effective in short and long-term studies, involving nearly 3,000 subjects that compared it for effectiveness against statin drugs. Policosanol is highly effective in patients with type II hypercholesterolemia and secondary hypercholesterolemia associated with diabetes mellitus or nephrotic syndrome.
In the research studies, policosanol produces cholesterol-lowering effects within 6-8 weeks. A daily dosage of 10 mg of policosanol typically lowers LDL cholesterol by 20 to 25% within the first six months. A dosage of 20 mg daily typically drops LDL by 25-30%. HDL cholesterol levels will often increase by 15 to 25% after several months of use. A combined LDL reduction and HDL increase produce extraordinary improvements in the LDL to HDL ratio.
Policosanol can also be used in place of aspirin as an anti-platelet agent for improving blood flow to the extremities. Twenty mg of policosanol compare favorably to 100 mg aspirin on blood coagulation.
Angina
Policosanol is beneficial for angina as well. It improves exercise responses of coronary heart disease patients with myocardial ischemia.
Safety
Policosanol is extremely safe and well tolerated. In all controlled studies, Policosanol has exerted no negative effect on any clinical and laboratory parameter. Side effects were comparable to placebos. Diabetics, hypertensives, the elderly and individuals with liver damage and kidney dysfunction can safely use Policosanol.
Dosage
Policosanol is primarily indicated for individuals with type II hypercholesterolemia that include the IIa subtype (elevated total serum cholesterol and LDL-C levels) and IIb subtype (elevated total serum cholesterol, LDL-C and triglyceride levels). Only a small dosage of Policosanol is needed (although one study showed best results are achieved with 40 mg daily).
The recommended starting dose of Policosanol is 10 mg once a day with the evening meal because cholesterol biosynthesis increases at night.
