Tocotrienols - 30 softgels

Tocotrienols
30 softgels
Product Code: 3101
Naturally-occurring vitamin E compounds
Powerful antioxidant for the cardiovascular system and protectant against UV exposure. Vitamin E was initially identified as a substance essential for reproductive health. However, it is now regarded as a significant nutrient involved in many biological systems including oxidative defense mechanisms, cardiovascular and neuromuscular systems, and cell growth regulation.

Tocotrienols are a group of naturally-occurring vitamin E compounds that exhibit biological characteristics similar in some respects and distinct in other respects, to their molecular vitamin E siblings, the tocopherols. Foods rich in tocotrienols include rice, oat bran, barley, and palm oil. Contrary to common usage, the term tocopherol(s) is not synonymous with the term vitamin E. The term vitamin E should be used to describe all tocopherol and tocotrienol derivatives that qualitatively exhibit biological activity similar to that of a-tocopherol. In other words, Vitamin E is not a single compound but rather a family of related molecules.

Coronary artery disease ranks amongst the leading causes of mortality in many countries. A major risk factor associated with the incidence of coronary artery disease is elevated levels of plasma cholesterol and low density lipoprotein (LDL). Tocotrienols have a beneficial effect on cholesterol metabolism that is not exhibited by the tocopherols. Tocotrienols have been demonstrated to inhibit cholesterol synthesis in a number of cultured cell types by inhibiting 3-hydroxy-3-methylgutaryl-coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase, the rate limiting enzyme in the biochemical reaction that converts HMG-CoA to mevalonate, a necessary step in the pathway for cholesterol synthesis.

Probably the most active area of recent tocotrienol research is their ability to regulate cell growth and applications as potential anticancer agents. In vitro (cell culture) and in vivo (animal) studies of the effects of tocotrienols on cancer cells show that tocotrienols had greater effects than the tocopherols on inhibition of cancer cell growth.
