Turmeric is revered for its multitude of health benefits. It has long been used for its ability to promote overall vitality and good health, from digestion to circulation. Historically, turmeric has been used in Indian (Ayurvedic) and Traditional Chinese cultures to tone digestion, support the liver, dispel parasitic worms, regulate menstruation, and strengthen the body. Curcumin is the active constituent from turmeric (Curcuma longa), which provides significant antioxidant activity. In a published study, the effect of curcumin on cell membranes was investigated in order to understand its role in enhancing immunity. Cell membranes are made up of a semi-permeable lipid bi-layer with various fats and proteins imbedded. Solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy was used to demonstrate that curcumin physically alters the cell membrane at the molecular level.
The study showed that even at low concentrations, curcumin had a strong effect on the structure of cell membranes. Curcumin actually inserts itself into the bi-layer structure of the cell membrane similar to the way cholesterol inserts itself into the membrane. Additionally, the researchers showed that curcumin induces a spatial ordering in the membrane, forming a highly ordered structure in the membrane that spans and possibly thins the lipid bi-layer.
This means that curcumin inserts itself into cell membranes and makes the membranes more stable and orderly, which may make the cells more resistant to infection. In addition, curcumin induces an inverted curvature of the cell membrane, which may positively affect various membrane functions of the cell.
Thus, the study authors suggest that the ability of curcumin to affect the structure of cell membranes at the molecular level may be the mechanism of curcumin’s immune-stimulating activity.
