A natural urinary antibiotic & antiseptic
ActiBiotic™, a urinary tract support formula, recently underwent a makeover to include berberine, an herb that has proved effective in improving kidney health during numerous animal studies. The grapefruit seed extract in the old formula has been replaced with berberine in the new formula. Studies have indicated that berberine can protect the kidneys and block the development of cystitis, an inflammation of the bladder that usually occurs along with an urinary tract infection. In one study, berberine also completely alleviated the bladder edema and hemorrhage that occurred in untreated mice with cystitis. In an in vitro study, berberine stopped the bacteria Escherichia coli from adhering to cells. The adhesion of E. Coli to urinary tract cells is considered to be the main cause of bladder infections.
In ActiBiotic, 40 mg of berberine joins a host of other urinary-supporting nutrients including cranberry concentrate, buchu leaves, and uva ursi extract. Cranberry and uva ursi stop E. Coli from adhering to cells in the urinary tract. The indigenous people of South Africa used Buchu leaves and oil of buchu for hundreds of years. The medicinal use of buchu was taken up by the early Dutch settlers and later introduced into the pharmaceutical industry in the UK. Buchu preparations are now used as a diuretic and for a wide range of conditions including stomach aches and bladder and kidney infections.
