Worn down by oxidative stress?
Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA), also known as thioctic acid or simply lipoic acid, is a vitamin-like substance that has generated much interest in the last few years, especially with regards to both its ability to act as a powerful antioxidant and its role in energy production. Since it is difficult to obtain therapeutic amounts of Alpha Lipoic Acid through the diet alone, supplementation has become popular and it is now widely recommended by practitioners, particularly for those worn down by oxidative stress.
Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA) is a sulphur containing fatty acid that is made in the body, and found in every cell, where it is involved in the biochemical processes that convert glucose into energy. ALA is also a potent antioxidant that is used by the
body to neutralise free radicals, and what makes ALA so impressive, is that it can work in both water and fat environments, whereas most antioxidants are specific to one or the other environment. For example vitamin E works only in fat and vitamin C only works in water. The importance of ALA is further emphasized by
research that shows it may recycle other antioxidants that have been destroyed in the process of neutralising free radicals.
The solubility of ALA in both fat and water makes it the perfect antioxidant to protect nerve cells from damage by free radicals, and explains why it has been the subject of much research into different neuropathies. It is also used to support the liver, protecting it from free radical damage and helping it to eliminate
toxins from the body.
There is also some evidence that ALA may have a role in tackling metabolic syndrome, since it is believed that oxidative stress contributes to insulin resistance. Therefore inhibitors of oxidative stress, such as ALA, may be able to improve insulin action.
Dosage:
Take up to two tablets daily with or without food, or as directed by a practitioner or pharmacist. For general antioxidant support a lower dose of one tablet daily may be used. Do not exceed recommended daily dose.
Caution:
Do not take if pregnant or breast feeding.
Those suffering from diabetes should consult a doctor prior to taking alpha-lipoic acid as it may enhance insulin activity.
