Manganese is involved in protein, fat and energy metabolism. It's primary function, though, is as an antioxidant. Manganese is an essential part of biochemical reactions that affect bone, cartilage and brain function.
Manganese plays a role in a variety of enzyme systems, dietary deficiency of manganese can impact many physiological processes. Experiments with animals have shown that manganese deficiency causes impaired growth, skeletal abnormalities, and defects in carbohydrate and fat metabolism. The adult human body contains about 10 to 20 milligrams of manganese. Most of this is concentrated in the pancreas, bone, liver, and kidneys.
