Promotes healthy glucose tolerance
Chromium has been shown to promote healthy glucose tolerance and may play a role in normal sensitivity to insulin. It has been shown to help in weight loss, promote healthy energy levels and normal mental alertness.
Diabetes mellitus, the most common form of diabetes, is caused by a defect in the production of insulin by the pancreas. The body cannot use glucose (blood sugar), its principle energy source, without insulin. A diet high in refined, processed foods and low in fiber and complex carbohydrates is believed to be a cause of most cases of diabetes.
A recent review article stated that chromium is an essential trace element involved in the metabolism of carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins, done mainly by increasing the efficiency of insulin. Chromium deficiency affects the maintenance of normal glucose tolerance and healthy lipid profiles. Deficiency symptoms, apart from impaired glucose tolerance, include peripheral neuropathy, ataxia and confusion.
According to a report in the journal Diabetes, large doses of chromium may help patients with Type 2 diabetes to significantly lower their blood sugar and cholesterol levels. In a trial in China, 180 individuals with Noninsulin-Dependent diabetes were placed into 3 different groups of 60. One group was given a placebo pill, one group was given 200mg of chromium, and the other group was given 1000 mg of chromium for their management of diabetes. The results showed that after 2 to 4 months of taking the chromium supplement the diabetics had marked reductions in their blood sugar. Another finding was that the most sensitive laboratory measure of diabetic control, hemoglobin A1c, dropped to normal.
Dosage: A 10 drop serving supplies 1 mg of Chromium. A convenient 50ml bottle provides a 110 day supply.
Caution: Consult your physician before taking any supplement containing chromium if you have diabetes. Its effects on insulin requirements are very real, and a potentially dangerous insulin reaction may occur as a result of too little glucose in the blood.
