Optimal absorption & utilization
Magnesium is important for healthy blood vessels, producing energy, and for maintaining healthy nerve and muscle function. Magnesium is a key micromineral, and many Americans simply do not get enough magnesium through diet. Opti-Mag is not just a regular magnesium supplement; it is a blend of four forms of magnesium, designed for optimal absorption and utilization.
A study reported in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reiterates the alarming effects low levels of magnesium can have on the human heart. In a double-blind, crossover study, researchers studied 22 postmenopausal women who stayed in a metabolic unit and consumed a diet of conventional foods containing either less than one-half of the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) of magnesium or more than the RDA (greater than 320 mg/day) for magnesium. The subjects were randomly assigned to the two groups.
Women consuming the low levels of magnesium had lower concentrations of magnesium in their erythrocytes, serum, and urine. In addition, the incidence of irregular heartbeats increased in women consuming low dietary magnesium. The results of this study confirm past findings that magnesium protects against ischemic heart disease, arrhythmia and sudden death. Yet, despite this nutrients importance, the typical American diet is low in magnesium. In addition, even if an individual consumes the RDA of 320 mg/day, if that same individual also consumes 1,000 mg or more of calcium per day this will result in an unbalanced calcium to magnesium ratio. Magnesium is a muscle relaxant, while calcium is a muscle constrictor. The dominance of calcium over magnesium produces symptoms of muscle spasm. Migraines, eyelid twitch, heart flutters, back aches, premenstrual tension, leg cramps and constipation are all linked to calcium overload. Therefore, evidence suggests that these two nutrients should be consumed in a one to one ratio.
According to the researchers, adults who consume excessive amounts of caffeine or alcohol, who take diuretics, or who live in soft water areas need to consume more magnesium as these three factors deplete magnesium levels and increase the risk of irregular heart beats.
Magnesium is non toxic; the only side effect of high doses is loose stools. It can be consumed up to bowel tolerance.
Dosage:
Take 4 capsules daily with meals. Daily intake may be increased or decreased; should gastric discomfort or diarrhea occur, reduce dosage.
