Normal cell function & transportation of nutrients
The active form of choline — cytidine diphosphate choline. Choline plays a role in normal cell function and transportation of nutrients through the body. A study has found that current recommendations for choline intake are likely too low for a large segment of the population. Animal model studies indicated that the amount of choline available to animals in the womb influences neural and cognitive development. The research was so convincing that choline was recently classified as an essential nutrient for humans, especially for pregnant and nursing women.
Cytidine diphosphate choline is the active form of choline. It is the active lipotrope form of choline normally produced within the body from cytidine, phosphorus, and choline but also manufactured as a supplement (and pharmaceutical drug). This unique form of choline readily passes through the blood-brain barrier directly into the central nervous system. Once past the blood-brain barrier, CDP-choline activates the synthesis of critical components in cell membranes, boosts levels of neurotransmitters such as acetylcholine, and enhances cerebral energy metabolism.
CDP-choline alleviates cerebral insufficiency, retards the further progression of alzheimer’s disease, increases blood circulation and oxygen utilization within the brain, is helpful in the treatment of severe depression, is speculated to be beneficial for the treatment of dyskinesia, improves learning ability, improves memory and is a valuable co-therapy for parkinson’s disease.
CDP-choline is also used as a brain circulation stimulator to treat disturbances of consciousness that may follow a brain injury (e.g. concussion) or brain surgery.
Dosage:
Take 1 capsule daily as a maintenance dose
Caution:
Use only as directed. Excessive consumption of choline can cause excessive muscle tension, which may produce symptoms such as a stiff neck, headaches or gastric cramps. A few persons may develop a fishy smell when using a choline supplement due to bacterial degradation of choline in their intestines. If this occurs, try taking your choline in divided doses with meals rather than all at once. Persons with ulcers or a history of ulcers should consult their physician before using a choline supplement since choline may increase stomach acid production.
