Supports healthy cholesterol levels
Niacin, in doses of one to three grams per day, is one of the safest and most effective substances to support healthy cholesterol levels. Niacin cheaply and effectively reduces cardiovascular risk and optimizes the blood lipid profile for most people. Niacin reduces total cholesterol, increases HDL-C (good cholesterol), and lowers LDL-C (bad cholesterol) and triglycerides. As an added bonus, niacin also is a powerful growth hormone and is very inexpensive.
Niacin does release histamine and cause capillary dilation, which may cause a harmless flushing of the skin however this effect can be lessened by taking the niacin after eating or by starting with a low dose of 50 to 100 mg. Then, as tolerance develops, you may begin increasing it progressively.
Recommended dosage:
One capsule per day.
Caution:
It has been recommended that niacin in doses over 500-1000 mg should be taken only under the supervision of a physician. Niacin in high doses can cause a harmless tingling, itching, or reddening on the skin. These symptoms usually resolve rapidly with continued use, but they may be intolerable in a few people. In some people, high-dose niacin may cause elevations of liver enzymes (SGOT, SGPT, GGPT), and/or worsening of glucose tolerance. Niacin is contraindicated in people with liver disease, diabetes, or with a history of ulcers. In these cases, we suggest switching to inositol hexanicotinate (IHN), which has not been known to cause these problems.
