Low-calorie delicious-tasting gum that fights cavities and plaque
Unique Sweet® Gum with xylitol, is a low-calorie delicious-tasting gum that freshens your breath, and fights cavities and plaque. Xylitol is a natural sweetener found in strawberries, raspberries and plums. Unlike sugar, xylitol is actually good for teeth. It’s beneficial for diabetics, it stimulates remineralization of teeth, and it fights ear and sinus infections.
Researchers in England have confirmed that the elderly can lower their risk of developing oral infections by chewing gum containing xylitol.
In the year-long trial, the researchers studied 111 adults aged 60 and older. One group chewed two pieces of gum containing chlorhexidine acetate, an antimicrobial medication, and xylitol, an extract from the bark of birch trees for 15 minutes twice daily. Another group was given gum containing only xylitol. The other group did not chew gum. Xylitol has been used in Finland as a sweetener for decades and has been shown to prevent cavities and to have antibacterial properties.
The subjects who chewed the gum containing both chlorhexidine acetate and xylitol experienced a lower risk of developing the fungal infection known as thrush, which can cause mouth soreness. In fact, this gum reduced the risk of developing thrush by 91%. It also reduced the incidence of angular cheilitis, a condition that causes mouth sores. Patients who chewed gum that contained xylitol only also lowered their risk of developing these conditions, to a somewhat lesser extent.
Patients who chewed the gum with both substances also experienced better saliva flow and lower levels of denture debris, a benefit that helps protect against cavities. The patients chewing the gums did not experience any side effects.
Although the gum with both the chlorhexidine acetate and xylitol provided additional benefits to the gum with xylitol alone, the researchers noted that gum with xylitol alone can provide a real clinical benefit.
