Immune-boosting effects with energy
Quercetin is a unique bioflavonoid derived from plant sources. In human cell culture studies, quercetin has been shown to inhibit histamine release. Bromelain, an enzyme found in fresh pineapple, supports the body in times of stress. Magnesium ascorbate is a buffered (non-acidic) form of vitamin C that, by delivering functional vitamin C and magnesium, helps strengthen immune response. Studies have also shown quercetin and bromelain help reduce inflammatory response.
Immune-boosting effects
In a study, quercetin was able to significantly strengthen immunity in animals exposed to the flu virus, consistent with the results of a human study released last year where the flavonoid had similar immune-enhancing effects. Past studies have linked exercise stress to an increased risk for influenza. The flavonoid quercetin also has been reported to inhibit infectivity and replication of a broad spectrum of viruses and may offset the increase in susceptibility to infection associated with stressful exercise.
Controlling histamine levels naturally
Quercetin is a powerful inhibitor of antigen-stimulated histamine release from basophils and mast cells, even at low levels (5-50 micromoles, or 1.51-15.1 mcg/ml). Unlike most anti-allergy substances, quercetin is highly effective at inhibiting histamine release during both the first and second stage of basophil histamine release. The anti-inflammatory effects of quercetin might be due to inhibition of the production and activity of leukotrienes and prostaglandins, and inhibition of histamine release by basophils and mast cells. Preliminary evidence suggests that quercetin inhibits antigen-stimulated histamine release from mast cells of patients with allergic rhinitis.
Quercetin supports athletic endurance
A published study examined the effect of quercetin supplementation on exercise performance to evaluate whether quercetin supplementation could improve maximal aerobic capacity and delay fatigue during prolonged exercise. The study showed that quercetin supplementation increased VO2max (VO2max is a measurement of aerobic capacity, also known as maximal oxygen consumption, and is the maximum capacity of the body to transport and utilize oxygen during exercise. Measurement of VO2max reflects the physical fitness of the individual) by 3.9 percent compared to the placebo group. Additionally, there was a significant increase of 13.2 percent in the time-to-fatigue in the bike-riding exercise.
