Studies have confirmed its anti-oxidant effects
Pycnogenol® is an extract from the bark of the Maritime Pine. Proanthocyanidins, a sub-group of the flavonoid family of plant compounds, are the key constituents in Pycnogenol® and are known to have significant antioxidant effects. Its unique action is due to its bioavailability and non-toxicity.
Pycnogenol first came to be researched by Dr Jack Masquelier of the University of Bordeaux, France, after he read of an unknown substance being used successfully by members of an expedition. His research concentrated on the naturally derived proanthocyanidins in Pycnogenol, which are found to have supreme effects as anti-oxidants. In vitro testing shows Pycnogenol has powerful anti-oxidant properties like those of Vitamins C and E. As a consequence of Dr Masquelier's findings, he developed the pine bark extraction process and was awarded a U.S. patent for the use of Pycnogenol as a free radical scavenger. Studies have confirmed its anti-oxidant effects.
