Maintaining the health of the liver
Silymarin is the active principle from the fruit of Silybum marianum, better known as the Milk Thistle. It consists of three isomers called Silybin, Silidanin and Silicristin. which are all classed as flavonolignans, Silybin being the most important constituent. For centuries it has been thought that the herb could have beneficial effects on maintaining the health of the liver, and studies over the past 20 years have indicated that when Silymarin is taken orally, the active ingredients remain in the liver. The daily job of the liver is to detoxify the blood of harmful toxins taken in with foods, such as alcohol, pollutants and bacteria.
Silymarin has also been shown to have antioxidant properties. Antioxidants help protect the tissues against the damaging effects of excess free radicals. This high potency product is a standardised extract prepared from the mature seeds from Milk Thistle flower heads and has a guaranteed level of 70 mg Silymarin.
